Mom-Rock Lingo

Skins: Slang for drums.

Skin: What you don’t want to see too much of in a photograph of a mom band.

Ginny liked us so much she asked if we could play at a Chili Cook-Off she was organizing for the Farmington Hills Police K-9 Unit. We accepted on the spot. It was to be the first of many charities we would perform at, and we got our very first press and another chance to use that great photograph that Diane took. It ended up being printed in the Farmington Observer along with a small article announcing the Mydols’ appearance at the fund-raiser.

I’m not sure whether the elderly really love rock and roll or if they are deaf, but they certainly weren’t stingy with their compliments that night. The only complaint I heard was from my father-in-law, Leroy, who said the drums were too loud.

Diane Wielgat was at the show too. We put her near the top of our VIP list. To this day her photo of Paige, Pat, and me remains one of my favorites, even though it doesn’t include Kara. Fortunately, Kara came back on board in January 2003. It was as though she never left. I imagine Paige was a little bummed to give up the lead singer spot—again. And I admit I was a little curious about her time off, but we never really talked about it. I think mom bands are really sensitive. We may squabble over little things such as what to wear or what songs to play, but we also know when to keep our mouths shut (most of the time anyway). All that mattered was that Kara was back. We were going to need a new band photograph, along with some new songs and more shows.
